Mentoring

Ever wish you could MFA but were too broke to get one? Let me help.

Here’s what it is:

Imagine this: you’ve got a novel in the works, or maybe you’ve published a couple books. You’re serious about your writing, but a little insecure about your talent. What you need, you tell yourself, is some formal education in writing. But, this can be costly and time consuming. Here’s where I come in. I’ve spent the money and the time to get my MFA from a well-respected institution, and I’ve taught creative writing for six years. I can help you hone your craft and elevate your level of prose. I can help take your writing to the next level. And, I’m cheap.

Instead of a formal school setting, I offer a casual mentoring relationship. Think private tutoring instead of classrooms and whiteboards. We’ll talk often, and I’ll set up a personalized course of education for you. Kind of a writing “personal prose trainer.”

Here’s what people are saying:

“Working with Aaron Gansky has transformed the way I write fiction.  When I’m revising now, I hear his voice urging me to push the language to new heights, to find the right verbs, to tap into my unique voice.  My writing has taken quantum leaps under his guidance.”–Dennis Fulgoni, author of ImpactAt the Broken Places, and All Good Killers.

“Sharp. Insightful. Hip. Personable, well-read, great academic cred’s, and skilled teacher. Meet Aaron Gansky: Mentor, Writing Coach, and now a good friend challenging me to reach the next bar.”— G.G.Paxton, author of The Darlana Series

Here’s how it works:

We communicate weekly (or more often, if needed), usually via e-mail, but also on the phone as needed. We’ll set up a program of study for you to help in the crafting of your novel. Each “mentorship” period lasts for three months. In these “quarters,” we’ll agree on a few books for you to read, including a craft book. You’ll study the books and we’ll have conversations about each. I’ll also read your work weekly (up to twenty pages) and give you feedback.

I’ll monitor your progress and provide structured feedback and/or prompts to help you elevate the level of writing.

While the beginning writer will likely benefit the most from my services, even established writers can learn much from this type of personal, professional relationship.

Here’s what you get:

  • An expert, unbiased opinion on your prose.
  • Professional feedback on a monthly basis.
  • Critical insights from someone who’s studied the nuances of writing for years.
  • Weekly individual communication for specific guidance and encouragement.
  • A course of education and readings designed specifically to strengthen your writing.

Here’s what it costs:

I charge $100 a month. However, the price is negotiable, and renewable each month.
